S&B is actively searching for an experienced Civil/Structural Engineer to join our team. The Civil/Structural Engineer leads engineering teams and oversees project execution, focusing more on strategic planning, team development, and delivery of high-quality engineering solutions. May also be responsible for executing and optimizing engineering designs for high-impact, multidisciplinary projects while serving as a technical authority in civil/structural engineering. Independently performs assignments requiring the application of advanced and specialized design engineering techniques to assignments of substantial complexity and strategic importance. Capable of exercising expert-level judgment in evaluating, selecting, and adapting engineering methodologies, procedures, and criteria. Assignments are defined by enterprise-level objectives and demand comprehensive investigation, integration of interrelated technical domains, and the development of innovative solutions to multifaceted challenges. Capable of applying advanced, expert-level judgment to consistently deliver technically sound, forward-thinking solutions that align with strategic project goals and corporate engineering standards. Ensures professional accountability, technical excellence, and innovation at the highest level. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct supervision of engineering staff assigned to a project. Provides technical guidance and coordination of assigned staff with other multidisciplinary teams. Responsible for performance management and professional development of assigned staff.

 

EDUCATION

 

Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, or equivalent.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

Normally requires 11+ years of progressive experience in Civil/Structural Engineering (or equivalent working knowledge/experience). Registration as a licensed professional engineer is required.

This position reflects an advanced, expert level of professional practice in civil/structural engineering. It requires demonstrated mastery of core engineering principles and expert-level proficiency with industry-standard design software and automated engineering tools. The role involves leading complex technical analyses, driving the development of innovative and integrated design solutions, and coordinating multidisciplinary efforts across large-scale or technically demanding projects. Engineers at this level are expected to consistently exercise expert-level judgment, provide technical leadership, mentor junior and mid-level staff, and play a key role in strategic planning, decision-making, and the advancement of engineering practices. Requires proven track record of effectively managing teams and delivering complex projects.

 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead engineering teams in close partnership with the lead designer in the planning and execution of projects, while maintaining full responsibility for technical direction, resource coordination, and delivery of high-quality outcomes.
  • Work jointly with the assigned lead designer to proactively resolve challenges, guiding decisions with technical authority, while fostering a culture of accountability and excellence within the team.
  • Maintain primary accountability for project scope, schedule, budget, and staffing plans, ensuring performance outcomes while leveraging the lead designer’s contributions and execution support.
  • Ensure alignment with strategic objectives, proactively identifying risks and resource needs, and implement corrective actions to maintain project delivery targets.
  • Conduct design reviews and ensure alignment with client expectations.
  • Mentor staff and promote continuous improvement.
  • Interface with stakeholders and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Apply expert-level technical judgment to solve multifaceted engineering challenges.
  • Perform structural analysis and design for highly complex systems, including evaluation of atypical conditions, advanced loading scenarios, and performance-based criteria.
  • Develop engineering drawings and technical specifications, ensuring alignment with project goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform comprehensive reviews of vendor submittals and lead resolution of technical discrepancies, ensuring full integration with project design intent and performance requirements.
  • Champion technical collaboration across cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams, fostering technical innovation and ensuring seamless integration of engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Drive the evolution of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices by incorporating emerging technologies, lessons learned, and industry advancements.
  • Ability to assume full engineering responsible charge for assigned projects.
  • Apply expert-level professional judgment as a licensed engineer, providing technical leadership, conducting peer reviews, and mentoring engineering staff.
  • Interpret and apply complex regulatory requirements, codes, and standards, ensuring rigorous compliance and proactive risk mitigation.
  • Oversee subcontracted technical services, providing strategic direction and ensuring alignment with project goals, quality expectations, and contractual obligations.
  • Lead consultations with construction personnel to evaluate and optimize design constructability, sequencing, and field implementation strategies.
  • Provide strategic conceptual design input to support preliminary project estimates, feasibility assessments, and early-phase planning.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

 

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of clients, managers, designers and engineers.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
