OVERVIEW

S&B is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical Specialist with responsibility to independently perform Mechanical Design activities for all phases of general equipment designs for a project of moderate size and complexity (e.g. continuing services project involving a single engineering discipline).  Must be fully competent in performing all conventional aspects of Mechanical Design and application of independent judgement for the evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation of standard design methods and procedures.  Responsibilities include generating scope estimate packages, priced equipment lists, work-hour estimates/staffing plans, project schedule details for mechanical engineering scope deliverables, and periodic completion progressing against a project schedule and budget.  Assignments have clear and specific objectives and may require investigation of a limited number of variables.  The position may require periodic evaluation by a hub department manager or director of mechanical engineering.  The position does require participation in performance reviews of engineering staff.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Moderate supervisory work required. Will provide technical/schedule guidance for engineering design personnel for certain project scopes.  Will provide performance feedback on engineering design personnel assigned to their projects.

 

EDUCATION:

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree) from an ABET accredited program

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Requires five to seven (5 – 7) years’ experience in mechanical design or related functional area (of equivalent working knowledge/experience).  This includes considerable experience in utilizing various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment.

  • Certification – Completion of NCEES FE Examination (preferred)
  • Actively working toward obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) License (preferred)
  • Proficient in engineering and design tool, including common computer aided drafting software and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency in interpreting engineering Codes and standards (i.e. ASME BPVC and various API recommended practices for fixed / rotating equipment)
  • Experienced with equipment engineering activities for either fixed or rotating equipment
  • Understanding how engineering deliverables fit into a project schedule and impacts to preceding and following activities in the schedule
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (verbal or written formats) with the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Comfortable at providing direct tasking to other technical staff regarding technical and schedule topics and interface with other discipline leads, project managers and clients on a daily / weekly basis.
  • Capable of presenting technical and non-technical data to peers, stakeholders, clients and design review teams in both verbal and written formats.
  • Skilled at interpreting and applying technical and non-technical data, including charts, graphs, design codes and engineering theories.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares basic design sketches and performs calculations in support of broader design activities involving the design of equipment, components, structures, or systems.
  • Conducts field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information.
  • Gathers data to help prepare equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions for approval.
  • Evaluates vendors' bids and drawings to assure compliance with specifications for simple equipment and specialty items.
  • Participates in the preparation of equipment lists, and specialty item lists. Includes providing specific details for the various simple fixed and rotating equipment in their responsibilities.
  • Participates in the review of design guides and specifications.
  • Prepare equipment data sheets.
  • Develop priced equipment lists for estimates.
  • Prepare work-hour estimates for project scopes and engineering deliverables/activities.
  • Participates in preparation of project schedules for mechanical engineering tasks/deliverables including upstream/downstream ties to other engineering disciplines’ activities.
  • Progress completion of mechanical engineering tasking against the project schedule.
  • Develop staffing plans for managing the project scope.
  • Direct engineering staff to complete activities and monitor progress of the same.
  • Read an engineering Code or standard and interpret it (i.e. ASME BPVC, API for simple rotating equipment).
  • Working knowledge of welding procedures, basic understanding of materials selection and nondestructive examination.

 

Travel – less than 10% occasional travel

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before clients or employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site.  This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.  Lifting to 25 pounds may be required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise.  Occasionally may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site.  This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
