OVERVIEW

The Benefits Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the company’s employee benefits programs, including health and welfare plans and the 401(k) retirement plan. This role is highly employee-facing and requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in Excel. The coordinator will also lead benefits-related portions of new hire orientations and support employees with benefits inquiries and issue resolution.

EDUCATION

 

Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 2+ years of experience in benefits administration or HR support.
  • Strong knowledge of health and welfare plans and 401(k) administration.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., VLOOKUP, pivot tables, formulas).
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with HRIS and benefits platforms preferred.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer and maintain employee benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, and 401(k).
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee benefits questions, claims issues, and plan information.
  • Conduct benefits orientations for new hires and support onboarding processes.
  • Process enrollments, changes, and terminations in benefits systems and with vendors.
  • Collaborate with payroll to ensure accurate benefits deductions and reporting.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations (e.g., HIPAA, COBRA, ERISA).
  • Assist with annual open enrollment, including communications, system updates, and employee support.
  • Generate reports and analyze data using Excel to support audits, reconciliations, and strategic planning.
  • Liaise with benefits vendors and brokers to resolve issues and improve service delivery.
  • Support wellness initiatives and employee engagement related to benefits.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

 

The ability to read, analyze and interpret policies, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical bulletins, and government regulations is essential for this role. The ability to write reports, business correspondence, policies and procedures is also a requirement as is the ability to effectively deliver oral presentations and to respond to questions from groups of managers, engineers, clients, and suppliers.  Job success often hinges upon interpersonal communication and relationship development skills, and job tasks require frequent interchange and successful completion depends in large part upon effective interaction and communication with others.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

 

Position requires the ability to calculate figures and work with fractions and percentages, as well as to apply concepts such as ratios, probability, statistical inference, and proportions to practical situations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Position requires the ability to hear normal conversation, see near objects and speak clearly. Occasionally may participate in a field trip to a job site which requires the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, sit and balance.  Lifting up to 25 pounds unassisted may be required at times.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Normally will work in an office environment, but occasionally may visit a construction site in an operating plant with proximity to operating machinery and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, fumes, and airborne particle.
