Acts as a staff specialist in the application of advanced theories, concepts, and principles for an assigned area of responsibility. The incumbent must be capable of analyzing all technical aspects of the subject area, defining the scope and selecting problems for investigation, developing novel concepts and approaches, and recommending major design changes.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for technical direction over a group of engineers or specialists and overall coordination of engineers, specialists and design personnel on one or more projects.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, or equivalent.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Normally requires a minimum of 12 years of experience in Civil/Structural Engineering (or equivalent working knowledge/experience). Generally functions as the discipline lead on a project. Registration as a licensed professional engineer (P.E.) and structural certification for the state of Illinois (S.C.) is required. Incumbent must be cognizant of the capabilities and limitations of various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment to effectively direct their use for diverse engineering assignments.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or member of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
