OVERVIEW

S&B is currently seeking a qualified Materials Selection/Welding Engineering Specialist. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting failure and root cause analyses, providing consultation on metallurgy and material selection matters, overseeing the development of condition assessment and inspection programs, making recommendations for destructive and non-destructive examinations, and offering technical support on multiple projects. This role will also involve reviewing and approving welding procedures and qualifications.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

May provide limited technical guidance for less experienced drafting or design personnel.

 

EDUCATION

 

Requires a four-year engineering degree as a minimum.

An advanced degree in Metallurgical, Materials or Welding Engineering is an asset.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of design, fabrication and construction experience in Metallurgy/ Materials Selection, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering and related functional areas (or equivalent working knowledge/ experience).
  • Requires working/applied knowledge of welding processes (e.g. SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, GMAW, SAW, etc.) and standard industry material processing techniques.
  • Work experience to include failure/root cause analysis, condition assessment, and destructive and non-destructive examination procedures.
  • Requires working knowledge of ASTM ASME, API, NACE, AWS codes, standards and practices.
  • Requires working/applied knowledge of standard industry recognized non-destructive examination techniques/ methods (MT (wet and dry), PT, RT, UT, hardness testing, etc.).
  • Experience with metallurgical (laboratory) testing and procedures is desirable.
  • Able to use statistical analysis for data driven problem solving.
  • Eligible for registration in professional engineering associations. A TBPELS license in metallurgical or welding engineering is an asset.
  • Actively participates in industry technical associations.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Be the key point of contact to provide material selections/evaluations, welding engineering support and related technical advice to the organization and its capital projects.
  • Create and review material engineering specifications/ material selection diagrams for the organization.
  • Use technical expertise to identify best quality practices and process improvements.
  • Determine testing and acceptance requirements for piping, equipment and structural steel fabrication.
  • Review metallurgical testing plans, procedures and test results.
  • Assist in the investigation of material failures, external quality defects, base metal/ weld metal failure analysis, etc.
  • Review weld procedures and weld procedure qualification documents for internal or external use.
  • Review post weld heat treatment procedures for internal and external use.
  • Review Charpy impact test procedures for internal and external use.
  • Review non-destructive examination procedures for internal or external use.
  • Establish and improve measurement methods for quality control and predictive process capability.
  • Participate in industry technical associations and committees.
  • Develop strong Client and Supplier relations.
  • Deliver technical presentations to our organization, our clients and the industry.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

 

Fluent and highly competent in English, both verbal and written forms.  Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of clients, managers, designers and engineers.  ToastMasters training is an asset.  So is fluency in any second language.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

 

Able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
